Book excerpt:
"The north of China is divided east to west by the Yellow Dragon, worshiped and feared as a god. This giant river glowing yellow in the sun splits the countryside as it travels down from the mountains in the west, pouring viciously into the oceans of the east. The dragon brings with it great bounty, at the cost of periodic and horrific destruction. Many fear the river god Chu Ling, who tamed the Yellow Dragon a long time ago so people could settle and grow crops, was angered, and used the yellow dragon to enact vengeance on the people.
The river carries silt giving the water its distinct ochre color. Prone to flooding, it can be catastrophic to live near the Yellow River, or in the surrounding plains. In conflict, the soil in the plains abutting the river are some of the most fertile in the world due to the silt left behind after a flood. Food grown here produces plentiful crops capable of feeding millions of mouths. This luscious farmland brings wealth and bounty to farmers, landowners, and merchants. Flowing from them in boats to other distant economies.
Prior to the cataclysm, the Yellow Dragon region was already a place full of strife and turmoil. A region afflicted by intermittent floods, famines, and plagues. The Great Horde lied in wait to the north. Brutal pirates hit the coastline villages to the east. Rebellions steeped to the south, and the west. Bandits, brigands, and warlords were in our midst. Powers vied for control of the provinces as they wrestled with the chaos in the world around them, and all the while foreign adversaries attempted to plunder our resources and wealth through manipulation, bribery, bullying, and subversion. This was already a dangerous place. What will it be like now?"
